NFC ring: what it's for and how it works
An NFC ring looks like an ordinary ring, but it holds a chip that opens your profile on the other person's phone. No need to pull out a card or spell out your number: you bring your hand close, that's all.
How does an NFC ring work?
The chip sits inside the band. When you bring it near the top of a smartphone, within a few centimetres, the phone powers it through its field and the chip sends it a link. Your profile then opens in the browser, with no app.
There is no battery: the ring never needs charging and never switches off.
What is it for?
The ORA ring shares your contact profile: details, social networks, website, links. The profile can be changed at any time from your ORA space, while the ring stays the same. It is not a payment ring and holds no banking data.
Which phones can read it?
Almost every recent smartphone. On iPhone XS and later, reading is automatic with the screen unlocked. On iPhone 7, 8 and X, use the NFC reader in Control Center. On Android, NFC needs to be turned on in the settings.
Why ceramic?
The ORA ring is made of high-density ceramic, harder than standard metal: it doesn't scratch in daily use and keeps its finish without patina. It is hypoallergenic and lighter than a metal band. The chip sits inside the thickness of the ceramic, invisible to the touch and to the eye.
Like any ceramic, it remains more fragile than metal against a hard impact on a hard surface.
Sizing and care
You choose the size when ordering, and we check it with you before confirming if in doubt. For care, a soft cloth is enough; avoid harsh products.
Ring, card or tag?
Same chip, same profile. The ring is worn every day, the card is handed over at meetings, the tag sticks to the back of the phone. Only the material and the way you carry it change.
Frequently asked questions
Can an NFC ring be used to pay?
Not the ORA ring: it only shares your contact profile and holds no banking data.
Does it need charging?
No. The chip is passive and is powered by the smartphone's field when it is read.
How long does the chip last?
Its lifespan is that of its memory, several decades under normal use.
What warranty?
Every piece is guaranteed for two years against manufacturing defects, chip and programming included.
